2008 Beijing Games Opening/Closing Ceremonies

This is something a little different, but I was just wondering who everyone thinks will perform at the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Games?

I was discussing this with my dad, and he's convinced that the Four Heavenly Sky Kings (Jacky Chang, Leon Lai, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok) will perform together, but I'm not sure. I don't think the PRC government will want any Canto-pop/HK singers (not quite 'Chinese' enough...), and considering the political situation regarding Taiwan (is it part of China? isn't it part of China?), they'll probably not choose any Taiwanese singers either. I'm tipping the PRC government to just stay with traditional Beijing opera-style performances.

So...I suppose my question is, do you think C-pop singers will be selected to perform in either of the ceremonies? If so, why and who?

those four are the only ones right now worth anything... I don't think any today are worth the time... although, it would be good to have current artists influence...

problem... yeah, Taiwan and Hong Kong... who knows?

Definitely not A-mei. ^_^ After she got blacklisted in the PRC for performing at Chen Shuibian's inauguration. Her blacklisting period is over but there's still people in PRC who won't listen to her music...
Yeah I don't think they will have anyone from Taiwan, unless they find someone who'll be publicly and unequivocally pro-reunification. But I think it's very likely that they have someone from Hong Kong. PRC wants to wave the "One China" flag whenever possible. Maybe they'll have Andy Lau sing "Zhongguoren" hahahaha.
As for mainland artists, hmmmmm... it's hard to think of any that have a really "wholesome" image you know? Maybe I'm not listening to the right people ^_^ but my knowledge of mainland Chinese music is mostly fun but content-free pop, or indie stuff... Artists from the mainland have only become popular relatively recently, so there's really no towering figures, except for Faye Wong, who's from Beijing but wisely went to Hong Kong to make her fortune. At that time she couldn't have become a star in the PRC. Nowadays it's different.
Ooh ooh, I know, there's definitely going to be some minorities performing. I can't think of the guys name but there's an Yi minority guy who's recently become popular...
If you want to predict who's going to play, just think IMAGE IMAGE IMAGE... The image that China wants to project to the rest of the world.

What about Jay Chou? He's just so incredibly popular,

They might want someone more *international* like Coco Lee - considering she sang at the Oscars.

Oh god, as long as they don't do the stupid background dancer thing they do at every chinese new years performance...it's so incredibly cheesy.

If they're getting the Four Kings, I'm so there. Hopefully Aaron will wear one of his 'special' outfits *loves that man so much*

Faye Wong ! Definitely the best Asian singer, she's still popular even though she hasn't had an album for several years, she's beautiful and from mainldand. There was a rumor a few weeks ago that she's been contacted to sing...

I don't think they'd get all four Heavenly Kings... maybe one. Faye Wong, I think, is a definite possibility... even though she's regarded widely as a singer from Hong Kong, she is originally from the Mainland and widely popular, even internationally, most likely for her role in 2046. (Some professors I know-- European-- are into her music, which says something.)

They might have that awful (ugh!) winner of the Supergirl competition... for some reason, she's very popular in China; Jin Sha is respectably popular in China and Taiwan. They MIGHT go with Vicki Zhao Wei instead, though... she's been in People magazine's 100 most beautiful people in the world twice (after her appearance in Shaolin Soccer), which means she has some international recognition.

If they go with anyone from Taiwan, it probably would be Coco Lee (again with the international recognition) or S.H.E., Wilber Pan WeiBo, or Angela Chang ShaoHan (all three of those artists, I hear, are very, very popular in the Mainland, and the latter two are connected to the Western world, too... which would help with communication issues).

i love Vicki, but if she was to sing something... I don't know.. she's not too strong there

I'm glad you mentioned Angela. I love love her music. That would be awesome to have her there...

BTW, somehow Sammi Cheng pops in my head... Is she from mainland?

Nope, Sammi Cheng is from Hong Kong :)
As for Taiwanese singers, I agree with CoCo Lee (but she's less popular recently, isn't she?) or SHE, but I would say Jay Chou who is really popular. However, I don't think they will be able to have any Taiwanese singers... That would mean acknowledging Taiwan as a part of China...
